This is a list of public transport phone application use cases. It is the result of Johan Nilsson (of Android stlmtraveling fame) and Johan Walles (of Android SL fame) having a fika and discussing cooperation.
This list is roughly sorted in order of real-world usefulness.
- Johan wants to go home from where he is currently.
- This could be the most common use case.
- Should require few clicks.
- Should be able to show the way to the nearest station / bus stop, since it’s possible that Johan doesn’t know where he is.
- Johan wants to go to work, and just wants to know which train to take.
- He probably starts at home every time for this trip, so a bookmark for the whole trip could work here.
- Johan wants to go visit a friend.
- He needs to be able to select his friend using the phone book.
- Updating the phone book with actual addresses is not the responsibility of the traveling application, get something else for that.
- Johan wants to go to Stadshuset but doesn’t know its address. He can find it on a map though.
- This requires Johan to be able to request a location from a map.
- For some locations, SL provides quite bad suggestions when fed a coordinate. Going to or from a specific stop in SL’s database works around those issues.
