Glossary

This Glossary is intended to define various terms used in the MapStory project. If you think of a new term that needs defining, add it here! Try to keep them in alphabetical order to keep searching simple.

Administrator: An Administrator is a Storyteller that has been given "superuser" status in the django-admin and thus has all additional administrative powers

Community Editing: Community Editing refers to the permissions set on a StoryLayer such that all Storytellers can edit the StoryLayer. A StoryLayer can also only be editable by the owner, or by a defined set of Storytellers rather than be totally "community editable"./

Community Initiative: A Community Initiative is a data collection effort that the MapStory Foundation places special priority on. For example, Political Redistricting is a Community Initiative. Community Initiatives are given a Community Initiative Page that is run by an Initiative Organizer(s).

Community Initiative Page: A Community Initiative Page is a page that uses the same base code as an Organization Page but rather than be used to highlight the work of an Organization, it is used to highlight the efforts around an Initiative. Initiative Pages are set up by MapStory Administrators only and Initiative Organizers are assigned by Administrators. Initiatives can be found in Explore just as Organizations can be.

Community Manager: A Community Manager is a Storyteller that has been given "staff" status in the django-admin and thus has certain additional administrative power

Composer: Composer refers to the app for composing a MapStory.

MapStory: A MapStory is a geospatial narrative that uses one or more StoryLayers as well as styles, annotations (StoryPins), zoom settings (StoryFrames) and other customizations.

Organizer: An Organizer is a Storyteller who has control over an Organization or Initiative page

Organization Page: An Organization Page is a specific profile type that groups StoryLayers and MapStories completed by multiple storytellers (or members of the Organization Page). An Organization Page is discoverable in Explore separately from individual profiles and is controlled by an Organizer

StoryLayer: A StoryLayer is a dataset that has at least attributes for location and time and is successfully uploaded and imported into MapStory by a Storyteller

Storyteller: A Storyteller is a registered user of MapStory
